Let’s Know the Types of Computer Networks by Area, Topology, and Function
For those of you who want to explore computer network science, the first thing you should know is the types of computer networks that exist today.

Because by studying the types of computer networks, you become more understanding when creating a computer network in a situation.

This computer network has many types, some are based on Area, Topology, even based on functions. This computer network, allows you to connect one computer to another computer. For that, you must learn the basics of the types of computer networks below:

Types of Computer Networks by Area

The types of computer networks this one is known as a type of computer that is calculated based on, scale, distance and geographical.

Therefore, this computer network must be connected based on the coverage area. Following is an explanation of the types of computer networks based on their Area:

1. PAN or Personal Area Network

PAN or an abbreviation of Personal Area Network is a computer network that transmits data between personal devices such as tablets, computers, cellphones, game consoles, and others.

This PAN can also be used to communicate between personal computer devices, in the sense of interpersonal communication.

This type of computer network is also often done without us knowing, which is like when we want to connect our personal gadgets to the Internet network. And usually, this type of network is done with the help of USB or Bluetooth to connect between devices.

Another example that we usually use on this type of computer network is when we want to watch movie shows on online streaming services using TV and when we want to send several documents from a tablet, cellphone or laptop to a printer through a network.

2. LAN or Local Area Network

LAN which stands for Local Area Network can be used for small area coverage.

For example, those who usually use this type of network are companies, schools, universities and other areas that have small area coverage.

By using a LAN, there are several computers in one area and they are connected to each other. One of these computers acts as a server or data bank, while the other acts as a client.

Examples of the use of this LAN we usually encounter in a school, company or university.

Usually, the computers in the building are connected to each other, and the computers are connected via a cable, it is used to be able to increase the speed and security of data when it wants to be shared.

3. MAN or Metropolitan Area Network

In this type of computer network, one can be used outside areas that cover 10 KM to 50 KM. The scope of the area used by the MAN network is quite extensive.

And MAN is a network that is often used to be able to connect several LAN networks that will form a wider network. Therefore this network is very suitable for use in networks in a central government in a city.

4. WAN or Wide Area Network

The last one is WAN or stands for Wide Area Network, this type of network has a very wide area or distance because it can reach all countries and the world.

Well, this WAN network usually consists of network types such as LAN and MAN. This type of WAN network only requires a router to connect all computers to the network.

Usually, WANs are also built by companies that provide various Internet networks.

To build a WAN network, you can use a telephone connection line which is commonly called a Leased Line, not only that there are some WAN networks that are built using circuit switching.

Types of Computer Networks Based on Topology

Every type of computer network must always be built based on the objectives and costs of the user. Therefore every type of computer network there are always advantages and disadvantages to each. Following is an explanation of the types of computer networks based on their topology.

1. Star Topology

Judging from its name, it is certain that this topology forms the topology of a star.

Because this star topology has one core node where the core note is in the middle, while the other computers will be connected to other nodes. For a clearer picture of this Star topology, you can see the image below.

The advantage of this Star topology computer network is that if one cable is broken or damaged, it will not interfere and damage all existing communications and the network will continue to run as it should.

And the lack of this Star topology is that if the HUB which is the center of the network experiences damage or failure, therefore all communications or networks will have an effect and become an operational failure.

This also requires the use of a cable that will be pulled at a central point.

2. Bus Topology

Bus Topology is one of the topologies that are often used by many people to connect existing computers. In this bus topology only need to use one long cable and terminal.

And then, in the end, there will be a terminator at the end of the cable. The bus topology process is felt to be easier on the installation process.

Types of computer networks

The advantage of this Bus Topology is that it does not require HUB and Switch in its application, and in this topology, it is also very easy to add new computer devices.

While the shortcomings of this bus topology are that when adding devices it will feel very slow on the network and if damage to the first cable will affect the performance of the entire network.

3. MESH topology

Mesh topology is a type of computer network that forms connections between computer devices that are directly connected to each other in one network.

The advantage of this topology is that it can detect errors or disruptions in the network quickly and the security of data that is shared in the topology network can be increased according to its needs.

Types of Computer Networks Based on Function

Types of computer networks must also be seen based on their functions because with these functions one can determine what type of computer network is appropriate to be applied and used.

Following is an explanation of the types of computer networks based on their functions:

1. Client-Server Computer Networks

In this type of Client-Server computer network, there are a number of computers that act as Clients, where the client computer can request data, while the Server will perform tasks that can provide data in accordance with the request of the client computer.

The advantage of this type of computer network is that it can control access, data integrity, and resources. So that the client can not interfere with existing access in the network.

While the shortcomings of this Client-Server computer network are that if we use a single server to be able to manage resources on the network it will cause threats such as SPOF.

Which if this happens will cause the cessation of all activities in the network.

2. Peer-to-Peer Computer Networks

Peer-to-Peer computer network is a network where each of these computers can be connected to each other in a network, and each computer can act as a client or server.

This computer network was also formed without centralized control on a dedicated server.

So that makes all computers have the same position.

The advantage of this network is that it does not have a special application for a server, and its installation is quite easy. While the shortcomings of this computer network are that the administration is not controlled and the number of files that are shared will affect the performance of the computer.
